“The goal of early education should be to activate the child’s own natural desire to learn.”

Program Opportunities at KMS

The Montessori Curriculum not only inculcates students with strong academic skills, but also students who work collaboratively, share their passions, communicate clearly, and care deeply about the world we all share. True to Montessori, our multi-age classrooms move in three-year cycles and are key to student success. In this environment, children in their first year learn from older friends and by the third year become role models themselves. The three-year cycle promotes a strong foundation for learning and applies to the Planes of Development that growing children experience. At KMS we offer programs for children ages 3-12 in three different core programs – Primary (3 – 6 yrs), Lower Elementary (6 – 9 yrs) and Upper Elementary (9 – 12 yrs).

“What will my child learn?”

Your child will learn concentration, coordination, and independence through purposeful activities appropriate for their level of development. In Primary, they will engage in practical life skills and learn to read at their own pace. They will use concrete math materials to help them grasp advanced concepts earlier than with other educational approaches. In Elementary Programs they will build upon this foundation and learn to conduct and present independent research based on their own unique interests. Across all program levels, your child will practice grace and courtesy, engage in peace education, develop a global perspective, and explore the wonders of nature. With spaces designed to inspire curiosity and exploration, your child will grow through self-directed learning.

Children arrive at school and enter the classroom independently. After brief circle time, the children have an independent work cycle, in which they are encouraged to explore activities of their choice in the areas of language, math, cultural studies, practical life, and sensorial. They may work independently or with a friend. During this time, the Head Teacher gives lessons to children individually or in a small group. The morning concludes with free play outside, in most weather conditions. All children participate in group singing and prepare two concerts each year.

They have the opportunity to consolidate their learning by reviewing materials and build confidence by teaching younger peers. Enrichment opportunities include Art, Music and Outdoor Classroom where they enjoy special activities with their peer group to build community. In the Lower Elementary classroom, movement and hands-on learning allow children to continue to explore the Montessori curriculum at their own pace. The Great Lessons presented each year establish the framework for the integrated study of subjects in science and cultural studies, including botany, zoology, physics, chemistry, and history. Enrichment opportunities include art, fitness, foreign language instruction, and music with the addition of learning to play the tin whistle. Work plans and mindfulness meetings allow students to balance academic, social, and emotional growth in the classroom. Each year, the class has one overnight field trip, a variety of day trips, and regular exploration in our Outdoor Classroom.

I love KMS because all kids are welcome there, and they all learn at their own pace. All the teachers are really nice. A Montessori environment is hands-on so we have tons of materials to work with and we don’t have to sit at desks. I feel like we can connect more with the teachers.
